About the engineer – Dean Mccarthy
I’m Mechanica’s owner and the person charged with making your releases sound great. My early career was as an international touring dancer and musician, before eventually switching over to live production and management. Alongside studying Audio Engineering at SAE London, I grew my career as a Live engineer, working with artists such as Sia, Dizzy Rascal, Laura Marling, Frank Turner and many more. I relocated up to Oxford with my partner and helped to build and launch SAE Oxford. As an academic head, senior lecturer and course leader in Audio Production and Music Business, I spent over 15 years mentoring students at diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels and spent over 9000+ hours teaching and supervising 100s of students.
After parting ways in 2024, I’ve been focused on building up Mechanica Mastering and doing something I’m really passionate about. I’ve been fortunate enough to already have a wonderful clientele of local and international artists, labels and business who are using my services but I’m always looking for more wonderful people to join the list.

So why “Mechanica“?
Well, my kids happen to have a fondness for Ancient Greece and the word came out of the works of the great inventor, mathematician and music dabbler – Heron of Alexandria. Heron’s writings encompassed a wide range of topics, including mechanics, automation, and invention. Heron was known for his work in mechanical music, including how he even harnessed the wind to power a mechanical device for producing music. In Heron’s context, “Mechanica” represented the principles of precise mechanics and engineering. Much like the intricate mechanisms and calculations by Heron, the mastering process involves delicately adjusting and fine-tuning audio elements to achieve the desired sonic result. By adopting this term, I want to demonstrate a commitment to precision, meticulous attention to detail, and a balanced approach to audio processing.
